The Research Institute for Optronics and Pattern Recognition (FOM), located in Baden-Wuerttemberg, works in the fields of military reconnaissance and intelligence, targeting and warning.

The main focus of work is imaging technology, which is of fundamental importance for new and future military systems. Image processing is particularly demanding in a military environment due to the large variation in targets, backgrounds, and visibility conditions.

Image processing and analysis increasingly demand a combination of different data sources. For example, helicopter obstacle warning applications require data fusion from laser radar, position sensors, and video signals.

Another field of work is the search for scientific, objective criteria for performance evaluation of sensor systems. This is essential for new sensor developments and the performance evaluation of competing systems.

An important aspect of sensor evaluation involves analyzing the influence of the atmosphere on the quality of the sensor data and hence on system performance. In this field the institute plays a leading role in Germany.

Defence and security applications include protection by warning systems and counter measures, reconnaissance with optronic and radar sensors, and strike enhancement due to improved precision.
